Soft skills and technical skills in demand in 2018 as Business leadership, AI and mobile technologies become the focus areas for Analytics Professionals

The early results of the 2017 IAPA Skills and Salary Survey are in and Kathryn Gulifa, Head of Customer Analytics Innovation, Customer Data & Analytics, Marketing at NAB and IAPA Advisory Board member, provided a preview at the IAPA National Conference, Advancing Analytics, in-October.

2017 has thrown up some interesting new highlights, as the report shows how the disruptors of Big Data, Cloud Technologies, Machine Learning and AI and the Internet Of Things continues to impact the salaries of analytics professionals.

Salaries and Skills
The 2017 Survey shows that there’s been a spread in the payscale year on year with salary increases for key roles and emerging talent. But those in the mid-bands will have to skill up to help separate them from the pack and continue to increase their salaries. The report outlines possible development paths for those pursuing manager or technical roles

Gender parity
While there are more women entering the sector, the issue of salary inequity remains. The pay gap between men and women only slightly improved even if half the Australian job market. And there is a long way to go before the sector sees gender balance within analytics teams.

Disruption
Disruption is now commonplace and continues to come from the cloud, mobile technologies, cyber-security and big data. But the sector is divided on where disruption is coming from with supply and industry holding differing perceptions.

Challenges
Finding time for innovation is seen as the biggest challenge. As technological change continues to accelerate, disciplined approaches to innovation are seen as essential or risk losing the advantage edge a strong analytics team provides.

The survey is designed to benchmark the analytics industry to see what skills are hot, what industries pay analytics professionals the best (and worst) and how current skills and experience stack up.
